A few days ago I was looking around Kijiji (like Craigslist of the great white north), and came across this:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The body is a little banged up, but that got me thinking - would an RX-8 make a good project car?
I’m guessing almost anything out there would need new apex seals, and that they aren’t the most fuel efficient, but there does seem to be a goodly number of lower-cost RX-8s out there. (Most being more in the $5k- $7k range). That seems not all that terrible in my mind. Thoughts?

Only a good project car if you want to work on a Wankel that doesn’t run. Head over to the RX-8 Club and see what people there say about availability of parts, projects, etc. They have an extensive DIY section. BTW, don’t everyone always assume the apex seals are bad. I’m not saying they aren’t, but it’s not the ubiquitous gremlin waiting around every corner that everyone says it is.

There was a good post about it here, actually. Basically if you budget in a spare/rebuilt engine as a part of the price and know that one day you may need to swap it out, it’s a no-brainer. The are also kind of crap for fuel economy since it’s essentially a thirsty 2.6L engine. In fact, here in Belgium it would cost more to register one than to purchase. But if I was back in the US and had a garage, I would probably do this kind of thing.

This would be the one to buy. I can almost guarantee it would be cheaper in the long run.

If an LS fits I can’t see why the Honda wouldn’t. Also I read somewhere that the s2000 and the RX8 use the same transmission. so realistically you would only the the F20C motor fab up a few mounts wire and plumb it and you are good to go.

Nice to see the low price RX8 is an international phenomenon. So many people not game for running a rotary.

Well, most things, but it’s alright as long as the buyer’s aware of what he’s getting into.

Can you afford everything you need to drop in an LS V8 on top of that cost?

I believe that $2000 RX8 will have more issues than just needing an engine rebuild and that dent in the door.
If you’re going to buy one, start with one in good condition and learn/research about keeping it maintained and reliable.
Start with reading everything in this link:
http://www.rx8club.com/new-member-for…
And there are ome good suggestions can be found in these links... pay attention to the info on the Sohn adaptor which sounds like a highly advisable upgrade to me:
http://black-halo-racing.myshopify.com/pages/rx8-care…
http://www.rotaryinsider.com/diy-tac38/sohn…
http://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yo…
http://www.rotaryinsider.com/diy-tac38/
From what I understand, rotaries can be reliable as long as they’re maintained correctly and carefully. And taking preemptive maintenance steps is also a good idea.

Oh I’m sure pretty much everything could go wrong with a car like that. But an RX-8 in general? Would one make a reasonable project car?
